Recently, we successfully designed and manufactured a 2,590 kVA 12-pulse rectifier transformer for a customer in Kenya, tailored specifically to the region‘s high-altitude environment.

Rated capacity: 2,590 kVA
Voltage ratio: 11 kV / 0.59 kV × 2 (dual secondary output)
Winding material: 100% copper
Temperature rise limits: 45 K (oil) / 50 K (winding) – deliberately lowered to ensure reliable operation at high altitude
Design Highlights
Kenya’s highland terrain requires special consideration for transformer insulation and thermal performance. At higher altitudes, air density decreases, which reduces cooling efficiency and weakens external insulation strength. To address this, we:
Increased insulation clearances to compensate for reduced dielectric strength of air
Lowered temperature rise limits to maintain safe thermal margins despite reduced cooling capacity
This ensures the transformer performs reliably and durably under local operating conditions.
Loss Performance – Exceeding Expectations
The customer’s original requirements were:
No-load loss ≤ 2,893 W
Load loss ≤ 19,157 W
Our actual factory test results:
No-load loss: 2,828 W (2.5% below requirement)
Load loss: 18,700 W (4.1% below requirement)
Not only do these values meet the IEC tolerance requirement (total losses not exceeding 115% of the specified values), but they also significantly exceed the customer’s expectations – delivering measurable energy savings over the transformer‘s lifetime.
Status
The transformer has passed all factory routine tests and is now ready for shipment to Kenya.
