Dry-Type Power Transformer

Dry type transformer uses air as a cooling medium instead of insulating oil. It is designed with epoxy resin or cast resin to encapsulate the windings, providing insulation and protection. Dry-type transformers are often preferred in indoor installations or locations where the use of oil-filled transformers is not suitable due to safety or environmental reasons. They are known for being more environmentally friendly, requiring less maintenance, and offering a higher level of safety compared to oil-filled transformers.

Advantages and Applications of Dry‑type Transformers

Advantages

Dry‑type transformers are highly safe because they contain no oil. This eliminates the risk of oil leakage, fire, or explosion, making them ideal for indoor installations and fire‑sensitive environments such as hospitals, high‑rise buildings, subways, and data centers.

They are also environmentally friendly. With no oil, there is no danger of soil or groundwater contamination, and no special oil containment pits or fire‑fighting systems are required. Disposal at the end of service life is straightforward.

Low maintenance is another key benefit. There is no need for oil testing, filtering, or replacement. Routine maintenance is limited to visual inspection and cleaning of dust from cooling ducts.

In terms of performance, dry‑type transformers offer excellent short‑circuit strength because the windings are encapsulated in epoxy resin, which provides mechanical rigidity and high resistance to short‑circuit forces. They operate with lower magnetic noise compared to oil‑immersed units, making them suitable for residential areas and indoor substations.

Installation is flexible. Dry‑type transformers can be placed close to load centers – inside buildings, on rooftops, or in compact prefabricated substations – without the need for oil containment. They resist high humidity and temporary condensation, and function reliably over a wide temperature range from -25°C to +55°C.

Applications

Dry‑type transformers are used in a wide range of settings. In commercial buildings, they are found in shopping malls, office towers, hotels, and hospitals, where fire safety and quiet operation are essential. In residential complexes, they supply power to apartment blocks and housing estates, often in underground or indoor substations.

Data centers and IT facilities rely on dry‑type transformers to provide clean, reliable power for servers, UPS systems, and cooling equipment. Airports and railway stations use them for lighting, escalators, baggage handling, signaling, and HVAC systems. In subway and metro systems, they power traction auxiliary supplies, station lighting, and tunnel ventilation.

Industrial plants benefit from dry‑type transformers where oil leakage is unacceptable – for example, in food and beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and clean rooms. They supply power to automation lines, CNC machines, injection molding machines, and other process equipment.

In renewable energy, dry‑type transformers are used for voltage conversion in solar PV plants, wind farms, and energy storage systems, often housed inside containers or compact substations. Marine and offshore applications – ships, drilling platforms, and ports – also use them, as they minimize fire risk and offer salt resistance with appropriate enclosures. Finally, they are convenient for temporary power needs at construction sites, outdoor events, and emergency power systems because they are easy to move and set up without oil leakage concerns.
